Sudan’s Health Ministry has reported that 1,316 people have died from cholera since the outbreak began in mid-August. The disease has affected 49,554 individuals across the country, per a ministry statement released on Tuesday.

The crisis has been aggravated by heavy rains and flooding since June, which created conditions conducive to the rapid spread of cholera.

The United Nations has highlighted the dire health risks facing Sudan’s children, with 3.4 million at risk of epidemic diseases.

Efforts to curb the outbreak are underway. UNICEF delivered 1.4 million doses of cholera vaccine in October, but Sudan’s war-torn state and fragile healthcare system continue to hinder disease control, worsening the humanitarian crisis.
